About the Virginia Blue-Collar Tool Foundation
The Virginia Blue-Collar Tool Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity based in Yorktown, Virginia. We provide professional-grade tool grants to graduating Virginia high school seniors who complete qualifying hard-trades CTE programs, earn industry-recognized credentials, and head directly into full-time work in the trade.
Our story is short.
VBCTF was founded after years of watching CTE graduates walk into apprenticeships and trade jobs underequipped on day one — not because they hadn't done the work, but because professional tools cost more than a brand-new graduate has on hand. The cap-and-gown-to-first-paycheck gap is real, it has a fixed dollar amount, and it can be closed.
So we built a foundation to close it.
Our model
In-kind grants only. We give tools, not cash, not gift cards.
100% volunteer. The board and the working volunteers are unpaid.
No staff salaries. No office overhead. No fundraising fluff.
Every dollar raised becomes a tool in a graduate's hand.
Our tagline says it more plainly: No Golf. No Galas. No Excuses.
Who we serve
We serve graduating Virginia high school seniors completing qualifying CTE programs.
We focus on the hard trades — welding, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, automotive, diesel, machining, manufacturing, and related fields. We don't currently award in cosmetology, culinary arts, IT, or health science. Those fields have other strong support networks; we're filling a gap that wasn't being filled.
How nominations work
A CTE teacher, school counselor, CTE specialist, principal, or workforce coordinator nominates a student. The nominator is the advocate. VBCTF is the guide that fulfills the nomination. The student doesn't fill out an application essay. The family doesn't disclose finances. The nominator confirms eligibility — including that the student qualifies for free lunch under the federal school meals program — and we take it from there.
Once approved, the student builds a shopping cart of the tools they need for the trade they're entering. We buy them. We ship them. They arrive before day one of the job.
Who funds us
Individual Virginians, small businesses, regional foundations, and an occasional larger grant. We don't run capital campaigns. We don't host black-tie dinners. We don't hire fundraisers. We ask. People give. Tools ship.
