For tradespeople & business owners

You had to buy your own tools. Help the next one start ready.

We put professional tools in the hands of certified Virginia trade graduates — so they walk onto the job first-day ready.

Help a graduate start
You already know the problem

A certification gets them in the door. Tools get them the job.

You've been on a job site. A young person can earn a real certification and still get stuck, because most shops expect them to show up on day one with their own tools. A starter set runs from several hundred dollars to well over $1,500, and there's no financial aid for tools. For a family that's stretched thin, that's the wall between a certification and a paycheck.

Tools are the last barrier between earning the skills and starting the career.

Ford's CEO says he can't fill 5,000 mechanic jobs that pay up to $120,000 a year — and he points straight at tool costs as a barrier for young workers.

All-volunteer

No paid staff. Not the founders, not the reviewers. The no-salary provision is written into our Articles of Incorporation.

Donations fund tools, not overhead

We buy professional equipment directly and put it in a graduate's hands. No cash to students. No gift cards.

Board-funded operations

The founding board is personally funding the first two years and the first several grants — so outside gifts go to tools.

What we do

Apprentice Tool Grants — built by people who know the trades.

The Virginia Blue-Collar Tool Foundation provides Apprentice Tool Grants. Teachers nominate the students they believe earned it, we score every nomination blind, and we buy the professional tools directly and put them in the graduate's hands. No golf tournaments. No galas. Donations fund tools, not overhead.

We're new, and we're building this. We haven't awarded our first grants yet — we wanted the system right before asking anyone else to fund it. This isn't a one-time handout; it's a career-long head start.

Why you, specifically

Nobody understands this better than the people who've done the work.

Fund a kit

A gift of up to $1,950 covers a graduate's full professional starter set. Give once, or sponsor a kit in your shop's name.

Donate tools or spread the word

Have quality tools to give in-kind? Know a CTE teacher who should hear from us? Point them our way — teachers are who nominate students.

The bigger picture

This isn't one kid and one toolbox.

The country is short more than a million skilled tradespeople, and it's getting worse. The students are ready. The only thing standing between them and that first job is a set of tools — and that's the gap you can help close, right here in Virginia.
